The Red-White-Red Card: A legal document for residence and work in Austria

What is a red-white-red card?

The Austrian government publishes an annual list of occupations with labor shortages in order to meet the needs of the labor market and close employment gaps. Third-country nationals who wish to enter the Austrian labor market can benefit from this program if their occupation is on the published list.

The Red-White-Red Card is a photo ID card that allows third-country nationals with the appropriate vocational training to work legally on the Austrian labor market.

Who can apply?

If you work in an occupation that is on the list of occupations with labor shortages published annually by the Austrian government and meet the following criteria:

– Professional training and experience

– Age and language skills

– At least 55 points in the rating system

Advice for Red-White-Red Card holders who meet the criteria for family reunification in order to bring their family members to Austria

The Red-White-Red Card also enables family reunification.

Red-White-Red Card holders who meet the criteria for family reunification can also bring family members to Austria by applying for family reunification.

If the application requirements are met, the application for family reunification can be submitted at the same time or later, depending on the choice of the Red-White-Red Card applicant.

Change of workplace

Applicants who receive a Red-White-Red Card receive a work and residence permit for 24 months in Austria. With this card you can work for an employer with a binding job offer for 24 months. If the employment relationship is closed or terminated, the work permit expires and a change of job must be agreed with a new employer in the same field.

Occupations that require higher education, such as computer technician, doctor, technician, electrical technician, as well as occupations that require skill and experience, such as cook, butcher, car mechanic, carpenter, painter, are also on this list!
Every year, the Austrian government publishes a list of occupations in which there is a shortage of labor and announces employment opportunities.

Applicants with one of the professions listed in the nationwide shortage occupations list are eligible to apply if they achieve at least 55 points according to the points table.
